Cortalim: Fish vendors from Thana, Cortalim have demanded that they be shifted to the newly- built fish market complex.

The existing fish vendors shed for the local fish and vegetable vendors lack hygiene, basic amenities, garbage bins, storage facilities, drinking water etc. The roof also leaks during the monsoon.

Cortalim Sarpanch Senia Pereira said the resolutions were taken last month to shift the existing fish and vegetable vendors and simultaneously follow the procedure for Sanad.

A visit to the existing old market shed revealed that the condition there is pathetic.

Fish vendors on the condition of anonymity said that they have been given assurances of shifting to the new market complex that has better facilities, for the last seven years now.

The Sarpanch acknowledged that the temporary shed is in a dilapidated condition.

She also said that those panch members, who are pointing out about the sanad, were in power in the past few years and questioned why they didn’t follow up on the sanad related matter of the market complex.

She added that she along with the Cortalim MLA Alina Saldhana had met Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and brought to his notice the issues with the existing shed.

“The CM directed us to follow the procedure and without making people suffer, the panchayat decided to shift vendors into the market complex. On June 10, 2020 we resolved to shift the existing fish and vegetable vendors to the new market complex. We also took the resolution to follow the procedure of sanad,” said Pereira.

“If we think on humanitarian grounds, the market complex is complete. So then why should the people have to suffer in dilapidated infrastructure? We should fight for the betterment of the people and not for our personal motto," the Sarpanch added.

It may be recalled that recently during a media briefing, an opposition Cortalim panch member had stated that although the market complex infrastructure is ready, it is not operational for several months as the panchayat has not received sanad of this infrastructure.

He at that point of time had also pointed out that panch members were told by the local MLA that after following the government procedures, the market will be made operational. “But now the sudden decision to shift the vegetable and fish vendors haphazardly without taking all panch members into confidence and without following the rules is incorrect," he had opined.
