PANJIM: As the farmers from Sattari has raised serious issue about wild animals destroying their crops, Agriculture Minister Vijai Sardesai expressed the possibility of declaring the wild boar as vermin animal, considering the way it has been creating nuisance to the sugar cane crops.

The farmers in Sattari had warned of a agitation pointing out that the issue of wild animals encroaching in their fields and destroying it had reached alarming proportions.

Sardesai said the State government completely sympathizes with the worries of the farmers and will work in solving it. “The issue of declaring any animal vermin involves multiple agencies. But there is near unanimity to declare wild boar as vermin considering the extent of damage it has caused to sugar cane crop in the State,” the minister said.

When asked whether he would raise the issue with the Forest department, Sardesai said “the issue will be taken up, where it should be taken.” Agriculture Director Nelson Figueiredo confirmed that there are more than 4,000 applications received by the department from the farmers for the compensation whose crops have been damaged by wild animals.

“The number of cases are high and we have been paying compensation to the farmers,” he said.

He admitted that the number of affected farmers is more but many of them don’t turn up to complaint to the Agriculture department. The farmers in Sattari have complained that herds of wild boar or peacocks or monkeys have been continuously attacking their crops. In absence of State government declaring them as vermin, these animals cannot be eliminated as they are in schedule three.
