MARGAO: Maina Curtorim police registered a case under Section 295 of Indian Penal Code against an unknown culprit for seeking to hurt religious sentiments of the people following the desecration of the well-known Alma Khuris at Chandor Cavorim.

Last night some miscreants smashed the cross with heavy metal thereby badly damaging it. Apparently a heavy blow was given at the centre of the cross with such force that the smashed marble piece was flung at the border of the courtyard in which the cross is erected.

Incidentally just last week another cross in Chandor-Cavorim near the bridge over Kushawati river that forms the boundary between Salcete and Quepem, was damaged in the night itself.

This is the fourth time that Alma Khuris is being desecrated. Local MLA Clafasio Dias who visited the site suggested enclosing the cross in grills to protect it, however locals present objected and said the cross had to be kept open and suggested that it be repaired immediately.

Some locals opined that the desecration was an attempt to agitate the Catholic community which is already upset with the turn of events in recent times including the proposed beef ban in Goa.

Former Sarpanch Etelvina Antao lodged a complaint with the police about the desecration following which police registered the case.
