CURCHOREM: Curchorem Block of Congress opposed the sanctioning of Rs 25 crores for setting up the Solid Waste Management Plant at Cacora, Curchorem.

Curchorem office Block President Pushkal Sawant said that former Chief Minister (late) Manohar Parrikar assured that the government will not put any money but it will be built by the private contractor and government will pay the money over 10 years after its completion and functioning.

He questioned then why the government has now sanctioned Rs 25 crores for the plant and to whom it will be paid; and if the Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) land admeasuring around 65,000 sq metres has been handed over to Directorate of Science, Technology and Environment.

He also demanded to appoint or hire more labourers and cancels the contract awarded by CCMC for the collection of door-to-door garbage as the contractor is using all the municipal resources. “The contractor is using all the municipal resources like vehicles and fuel including driver and maintenance of vehicles and other machinery. So what is the use of giving the contract to a private party by tendering it at the cost of Rs 1 crore. Instead of that, CCMC could appoint or hire more additional labourers and collect it as all over, the local bodies are doing that job,” said Pushkal.
