MARGAO: The Curtorim Panchayat on Saturday strongly opposed the proposed Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) camp in the village.

The meeting chaired by sarpanch Milagres Rodrigues was attended by Deputy Sarpanch Simon Barretto, panchas, besides Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco. “In the meeting, the panchayat cleared its stand in opposing the IRB camp on the land of Leprosy Hospital,” said Simon.

“The panchayat body has urged the government to scrap the IRB project plan in Curtorim; instead, a project related to health will be highly appreciated. We demand a multi-facility hospital in Curtorim, which will benefit the residents, besides others,” he stated. MLA said he will be with the people of Curtorim and will oppose the IRB project at any level.

It may be recalled that Reginaldo raised the issue in the recently concluded assembly session and objected to the IRB camp in Curtorim on the land which was once Asia’s first Leprosy Hospital.

Earlier, the Curtorim gram sabha objected to the setting up of IRB camp in the village and had resolved to unitedly fight against the government's continuous efforts to change the use of land.

The villagers and the panchayat demanded that something that would benefit the villagers like a nursing institute, an educational institute, a super specialty hospital, a fire station, or even a botanical garden can be set up in the area.
