PANJIM: The Congress on Thursday fielded Ranjit Rane from Poriem Constituency after the longest serving MLA Pratapsing Rane decided not to contest the Assembly elections. Ranjit is the son of former MLA late Jaisingrao Rane, who represented the erstwhile Sattari Constituency  in 1963.

The Congress Central Election Committee (CEC) had earlier declared candidature of Pratapsingh Rane for Poriem seat. But there were doubts whether Rane would contest his 12th election after he dropped hints of retiring from politics. Soon there was power struggle within the family after BJP gave ticket to Rane’s daughter-in-law Divya Rane for Poriem and renominated Health Minister Vishwajit Rane for Valpoi seat.

The State government had recently bestowed with Lifetime Cabinet Status to the longest serving legislator Pratapsingh Rane. Since 1973, Rane has never lost Assembly elections. Meanwhile, the Congress also announced candidature of Khemlo Sawant for Sanvordem Constituency.
