A day after CM left for US none from BJP or alliance partners willing to speak on leadership change or handing over of charge

PANJIM: The usual activity at the Secretariat as well at the BJP headquarters was visibly missing a day after Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar was flown to the United States for treatment. The BJP leaders as well as the alliance partners seemed to be in damage control mode, with neither willing to come on record viz-a-viz any change in leadership.

The five-member BJP core committee, which met Parrikar in Mumbai, before his departure returned to Goa without going to Delhi as had been planned. The team was scheduled to meet the BJP central leadership to discuss leadership changes and the CM’s absence.

The team had also finalised the name of PWD & Transport Ramkrishna (Sudin) Dhavalikar, who would hold charge in the CM’s absence and an order to that effect was to be issued. However, this decision was not acceptable to some BJP MLAs as well as to the alliance partners and the plans had to be changed.

“The CM said no charge would be given to anyone and he would run the administration from US,” sources said.

South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar, speaking to Herald, confirmed that the team returned to Goa but refused to give any further details.

BJP State president Vinay Tendulkar, who is also a Rajya Sabha Member, said Parrikar would be back in Goa by Tuesday. “There were no talks on any issue. Parrikar is our leader and no discussion was held on leadership change. CM will be back soon,” he said.

Dy Speaker Michael Lobo, said that CM Parrikar is seized of the matter. “He (CM) knows that the functioning by all ministers including him is important, so whatever needs to be done in this manner will be done by the CM and BJP in consultation with the alliance partners,” he stated.

None of the politicians were ready to speak on the leadership change or handing over charge. It was only Union AYUSH Minister Shripad Naik who on Wednesday had said that a decision on what next had to be taken at the earliest.

When pointed out that the sizeable number of cabinet ministers are sick, he had said that is what the BJP team would be discussing in Delhi. The meeting never happened.
