Major part of gram sabha witnessed heated discussions and shouting

MARGAO: The Davorlim Dicarpale gram sabha after a heated discussion that lasted for more than an hour major part of which was just shouting amongst the villagers with the panchayat body remaining silent spectators, finally resolved to have a realignment of the proposed overhead bridge across the railway track in the village.

Alex Borges raising the matter on behalf of the farmers stated that their agricultural land would be destroyed as the approach road will be constructed by filling mud over the fields where they presently cultivate paddy and vegetables post the monsoons.

However, some of the villagers retorted that the same farmers were the one who moved around with former MLA Avertano Furtado to not only propose but even approve the bridge and were now objecting to it.

This led to heated discussion with some farmers asserting that who they supported in the election should not be an issue when their livelihood is concerned and the new Sarpanch Flancy Gomes had to time and again ask the people whether they wanted the overhead bridge or not.

Even a division of the house was undertaken with those in favour of the bridge asked to stand and the Sarpanch noted that they were in majority but did not ask for those not in favour of the bridge to stand up.

Finally after much discussion it was decided that the bridge was required but the panchayat would discuss with the concerned engineers about the alignment and would take the farmers into confidence and finally align the bridge so that it does not affect cultivated land and if possible the bridge would be over the existing road itself.

The farmers were demanding that a 20 metres wide bridge was not required and instead only a bridge for two wheelers was required. However, this suggestion was rejected by those present that the bridge would have to be for even four wheelers.

The Sarpanch also assured the villagers that the matter regarding illegal filling of a paddy field would be discussed at the panchayat meeting even as some members were demanding that the owners of the field, the Communidade should take some action primarily because the issue was raised by a Communidade shareholder.

!0 of the 11 panchayat members were present for the gram Sabha attended by over 100 villagers with Paresh Naik being the only person absent.
