Davorlim villagers demand traffic signals at Aquem junction

MARGAO: The residents of Davorlim village staged a protest on Tuesday afternoon at the main Aquem junction and have demanded that traffic signals be installed before the monsoon, failing which they will launch a mass agitation on the roads.

One such resident, Seby Colaco, said that this junction connects to nine roads and all important highway routes due to which there is heavy traffic at this junction and that there have been many accidents taking place too.

“In Navelim a road was built and after a month there was a traffic signal. Here we have been waiting for a traffic signal for 15 years,” he added.

Another resident Anand Sawant said he had written to the District Collector in 2021 asking for traffic signals and that a letter had been then sent by the collector to the traffic police, PWD and transport department.

However, as a year had passed and there was no change on the ground, he wrote to the collector again and was told a traffic signal can’t be installed but a flyover could be built later on.

Sawant demanded that traffic police be stationed here during the peak hours and questioned why traffic police are only posted when ministers pass through. He accused the government of not caring about the lives of the residents and warned to take the authorities concerned to court if any local loses their life in an accident here.
