PANJIM: Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant on Wednesday said the State Cabinet deferred taking a decision on the implementation of new Motor Vehicle (MV) Rules in Goa stating that a decision on will be taken only after holding detailed discussion and deliberation with stakeholders.

“Decision on new MV Act will only be taken after holding detailed discussion and deliberation with stakeholders,” Sawant said.

He said before implementing the huge fines, the government will look to improve the infrastructure. “More than the fines, we need to create awareness on the road safety and it has to come as a curriculum in school,” he said.

A day earlier Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho had said he would place the implementation of new MV Act before the Cabinet.

Sources in the Cabinet said that the minister moved the agenda as a table item but was told by the chief minister it would not be discussed till infrastructure is in place.

Union Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday had ruled out any changes in the fine structure in the new Motor Vehicle Act.

Godinho, during a video conference meeting with Gadkari, had pointed out to strong opposition raised by people to the fines introduced in the MV Act against the offenders.

Gadkari has said that the Act be enforced to change th ehabit of people, Godinho added.
