MARGAO: In an order passed by the South Goa District Collector & Magistrate, Asvin Chandru, all persons applying for delayed registration of birth or death can get the certificate only after receiving a clearance from the Deputy Collector concerned, whose office has to undertake a thorough verification first.
“The registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, 2023, provides that any birth or death of which delayed information is given to the registrar, after one year of its occurrence, shall be registered only on an order made by a district magistrate or Sub-divisional magistrate (SDM),” said Chandru. Officials at the collectorate office explained that this means that those persons from South Goa, who did not immediately register the birth and death of their respective family members, will now have to obtain the order of the deputy collector first, who would issue it only after conducting a verification exercise. This decision follows cases of fake certificates being issued due to forgery by applicants..
