CURTORIM: Even as five Salcete police stations in the last five months booked 4042 cases for violation of Motor Vehicle Act like over speeding, driving in rash and negligent manner, overtaking, etc and collected fines besides suspending licences, there is no drop in road accidents and deaths.
It is pertinent to note that in the jurisdiction of five police stations in the last five months, 18 persons died and 27 other accidents were reported in which several persons were injured.
In comparison to last year’s first five months, 18 fatal accidents took place this year. Going by these records there appears to be no plan in place from the concerned authorities to deal with the surge in mishaps and the growing number of vehicles in the taluka.
Of these 18 fatal accidents, the Margao and Maina Curtorim police registered seven each while Colva saw three and one in Cuncolim.
Police said that no fatal accidents were reported in Fatorda. Twenty-seven other minor accidents were also reported in Salcete.
Of these 27 minor accidents, the highest number of 9 minor accidents were reported at Fatorda, 6 in the jurisdiction of Maina Curtorim, 5 in Margao, 4 in Colva and 3 in Cuncolim police.
In 2021, twenty-one fatal accidents were reported in Salcete and 51 minor mishaps in which several persons sustained injuries.
