MARGAO: South Goa district Collector Venancio Furtado on Saturday ordered a halt to the demolition of the sky bus structure after tons of debris landed on the main Rawanfond-Margao road Saturday morning.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident; however, an Innova car was damaged after an overhead electric conductor landed on the vehicle, exposing the safety precautions adopted by the contractor while undertaking the demolition.

The debris blocked one lane of the main road, causing traffic bottleneck, prompting the police to close the road for traffic for some time.

Locals said the incident occurred at around 11 am when the contractor engaged by the Konkan Railway Corporation was dismantling the sky bus project. A resident Damu Naik said that the contractor did not take any precautionary measures at the site while razing down the structure. “We had warned the site supervisor a couple to times to take extra precaution while razing down the portion of the sky bus structure close to the road, but in vain,” he said.

The site supervisor Mohammed Ayub, however, maintained that two persons were regulating the traffic when the structure was being demolished, even though locals said there was only one person deployed for the work.

District Collector Venancio Furtado rushed to the spot and ordered an immediate stop to the demolition activity. He has called for a meeting in the district Collectorate on Monday to discuss the issue.

Margao PI Sudesh Naik said that the police have registered a case of accident and have started investigations into the case.
