Diverting Mhadei will hit us hard, Goa tells Tribunal

Team Herald

PANJIM: Goa government submitted to the Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal the impact on Goa and its inhabitants if the proposed diversion and projects on the Mhadei of the upper riparian states of Karnataka and Maharashtra are allowed.

Senior Counsel Atmaram Nadkarni, appearing for the State put forth his arguments in rejoinder with facts and figures demolishing the Karnataka case. Documents used by Karnataka to cross examine Goa witness were used against them.

He pointed out that Karnataka’s contention, in as much as no case is made out by Goa unless a case of prejudice is made out, is an ill and misconceived and illogical contention. Nadkanri referred to provisions of the Interstate Water Dispute Act, Goa complaint letter and evidence of its witnesses to demonstrate that Goa has more than made out a case on this.

Nadkarni concluded his arguments in rejoinder with a caveat that he will submit further arguments if Karnataka or Maharashtra raise any new points in their rejoinders. The hearing will continue on Wedensday, and Karnataka will argue in rejoinder.
