PANJIM: Noting that many students drive rashly and recklessly, the State Education Department has banned school students from riding two-wheelers to the institution.

Directorate of Education has written to the heads of the institutions to ensure that no students drive two-wheelers to the school. The institutions have been directed to submit a compliance report on this by end of each term of the Academic Year.

The decision comes against the backdrop of students, including minors, riding two-wheelers to the school in a rash manner. The State Road Safety Council had also raised concern over reckless riding by school students.

In a circular issued, Education Director Santosh Amonkar has asked schools to take up the issue of students riding two-wheelers to school at the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) meetings. “Schools will ensure that no students ride two-wheelers to the school,” he said.

Amonkar said that it has been noted that many students are seen using two-wheelers and riding in reckless manner violating traffic rules. “The issue needs to be strictly addressed in the PTA meeting,” he said.

Sources said that the department intends to take necessary action against schools that are found to be not adhering to the circular. “Traffic police have also brought to the notice of the department that large numbers of school students are involved in traffic violations,” sources said.

Sources said that the issue, in the past, was taken up with school authorities. “It is important that PTAs act stringently in the matter,” sources said.
