PANJIM: Minister for Environment Nilesh Cabral on Monday said that the work of doubling of the railway line from Kulem to Vasco will continue, while work between Tinaighat and Castlerock has been suspended as per the Supreme Court directions.

The Apex Court on May 9 canceled the green clearance granted to the doubling of the railway line between Tinaighat and Castlerock in Karnataka and Kulem in Goa. It has however, given liberty to Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) to carry out a detailed analysis on the impact of the proposed project on the bio-diversity and ecology of the protected areas under the wildlife sanctuary and then submit a fresh proposal.

Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant on Monday chaired a meeting on railway double tracking issue. The meeting was attended by Cabral, Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho, Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel and officials of South Western Railways (SWR).

During the meeting, the government directed SWR to undertake work of pending underpass and over bridges through central funding as against the earlier proposal of 50:50 sharing. The government also decided to refund Rs 15cr deposited by the SWR towards the work.
