PANJIM: The driver of the vehicle, involved in transportation of iron ore, would be debarred for one month, if found to be indulged in violating speed limit rules.

The Directorate of Mines and Geology (DMG) had in April 2016, issued series of instructions concerning road safety of the mineral transportation route under Goa (Prevention of Illegal Mining, Storage and Transportation of Minerals) Rule 2013, wherein a speed limit of 40 kms per hour was fixed. The transportation of mineral ore can take place only between 6 am and 10 pm.

While the earlier instructions warned of action against the truck, in a fresh circular issued, Director Vivek PH, has said that the “driver of the vehicle would be debarred for upto one month for willful violation”.

“Also, the period of debar for the trucks in such cases would be reduced to maximum three days,” he added.

As per earlier instructions, on every sixth or eighth violation of the speed limit, the trucks would be debarred for a period of one month to entire season.

On the first violation, the truck would be banned for one day, three-day ban on second violation, seven-day ban on third time violation. On the fourth occasion, the truck would be debarred for 10 days and 15 days on fifth violation. One-and-two month ban would be imposed if the violation touches seven times, while suspending throughout the season on eighth violation.

“Since debarring of trucks is done by use of software- Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), the social, political or economic status of either of the truck owner or driver shall not influence either monitoring or process of debarring trucks from transportation of minerals,” the department had said.

The directions were issued following a fatal accident involving truck transporting ore that killed two women in Curchorem in April 2016.
