MARGAO: A man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly vandalising property of the Holy Spirit church in Margao.

According to the police, the man, who was in an inebriated condition, was knocked down by a motorcyclist as he was trying to flee towards the Old market after vandalizing the church property.

He was shifted to the Sub-District Hospital for treatment by some locals, the police official said.

The police said the man was later identified on the video footage damaging flower vases of the church. The alleged accused also damaged some vehicles parked in the church campus.

"We have cross-checked the footage captured by CCTVs of the church and we found that he is the same person," said PI Kapil Naik.

Some parishioners, who had gathered at the church following the incident, demanded that the campus of the church be enclosed with a wall or fenced with a wired mesh.

Meanwhile, Vijai Sardesai rushed to Holy Spirit Church and commended
the alert locals and the police for taking quick action in apprehending
the accused. He said he has instructed the police to conduct a thorough
enquiry to get to the bottom of matter.
