VASCO: Dust pollution rising from the MPT berth No 10 may have been taken easily by the MPT, but the people are now worried about their future in Vasco with more berths coming to Kharewado and Vasco bay.

The dust pollution has yet again reminded the people of Vasco that MPT cannot be trusted with tackling environmental issues. The people allege that the Goa State Pollution Control board and the MPT are hand in gloves over environmental issues surrounding port.

The Vasco residents say that Berth No 10 is closest to the Vasco town and the dust from the bauxite loading spreads to the town areas. “The new berths are going to be much closer to the town; and if the same operations of dirty cargo happen, the Vasco residents will have to leave the town,” Vasco resident Vikram Sarmalkar said.

A local fisherman said that even after the video of dust pollution in the port town has gone viral on social media, the GSPCB has not shown concern and stopped the cargo logistics.

“The fishermen reside close to the present and future berths of MPT, therefore, we demand that the GSPCB take immediate action against the dust pollution,” Sarmalkar said.

The residents said that the people have been facing dust pollution for last three days.

When contacted for his say, MPT Vice Chairman G P Rai said, “Bauxite is permitted for transport; it is heavier then air; it doesn’t rise above one or 2 meters. We are committed to controlling pollution and will accept any changes if suggested.”
