SANGUEM: Replying to the representation from the Sanguem sugarcane cultivators, Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant Kavlekar on Thursday assured to solve their problems soon after consulting with the Chief Minister.

Kavlekar informed the farmers’ delegation that he is with them and assured to come out with a concrete solution in the best interest of the sugarcane farmers.

“Ever since the issue of Sanjivani sugar factory has been haunting the farmers, I have rallied behind the cultivators and will continue to do so,” said Kavlelar.

“When the farmers raised the issue of delayed payments of sugarcane supplied to the factory, I personally spoke to the Chief Minister and got the payment released just before Chaturthi,” Kavlekar claimed adding that the balance amount which is left as of now towards harvesting charges will be paid soon.

He also assured to pay due compensation to 89 farmers who could not harvest their plantation in the last season for want of labour and as Laila Factory in Kolhapur had shut its operations.

Kavlekar said he would personally pursue the matter with the Chief Minister to seek an early solution.

Francisco Mascarenhas, who led the delegation to the Deputy Chief Minister, informed that they expect a positive reply from the government with respect to the issues faced by them.

Mascarenhas said they also had a telephonic conversation with the Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant who assured them of personal hearing soon.

The representation was handed over to the Dy CM by the sugarcane farmers from Sanguem following a meeting held at Wadem, Sanguem last week. The farmers have sought decision from the government on Sanjivani’s future and to also decide on the standing crop which is due for harvest.
