PANJIM: In a major setback to the State government, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has declined to grant any relaxation to the Model Code of Conduct for various infrastructural works stating that the “process be done only after conclusion of counting” on May 23.

The two-and-a-half month model code of conduct in Goa came into force on March 10 with ECI announcing the poll schedule for the country.

Chief Secretary Parimal Rai had approached the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) requesting him to relax the code for granting approvals to various development and infrastructure works. The government has written that since pre-monsoon works are to be taken up across the State, the code in South Goa be relaxed as there is no election pending in the district. The CEO had then sent the communication to ECI for necessary directions.

ECI Under Secretary IC Goel in a communication to the CEO said that “the commission has considered the matter and has decided that the process be done after conclusion of counting”.

With less than a month left for the south west monsoons to hit the State, the government has not been able to undertake any infrastructural works, especially pre-monsoon works due to code.
