PANJIM: Former MPDA Chairman Krishna Daji Salkar joined the BJP on Tuesday indicating he could be a replacement to sitting MLA Carlos Almeida, who has been making statements against the government recently.

Daji Salkar along with councilors Shami Salkar and Shailesh Borkar joined the party at a mega event held outside BJP headquarters in Panjim where Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, along with others were present.

Salkar had contested against Almeida as an Independent in 2017 and lost by a small margin of 750 votes.

"Many leaders and karyakartas will be joining BJP in the coming days. The work of the Central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made a strong impression on the people who are wishing to work with the BJP and make the country a strong nation in the world,” the CM said.

The BJP, Dr Sawant added, will win an absolute majority. “BJP’s slogan ‘22 plus’ will come true. With the entry of Daji Salkar, BJP has become stronger in Mormugao taluka. The Lotus will bloom in all the four constituencies of Mormugao in the upcoming elections, once again,” he said.

BJP President Sadanand Shet Tanavade  said that Salkar’s re-entry in the BJP indicates his heart was always with the party. “Salkar's ideology is on the same lines of BJP. Even though he remained an independent candidate five years ago, he was still with the BJP. Today, he has joined the party yet again. This makes BJP’s victory in Vasco all the more certain. We will continue to hold strong ground in Mormugao and Bicholim,” he said.

Almeida has recently shown signs of resentment with statements against the government.
