PANJIM: In a latest move, the Department of Food and Drug Administration has begun ‘spot qualitative test’ of the fruits being sold in the markets, for a quicker detection of the presence of chemicals if any.

PANJIM: In a latest move, the Department of Food and Drug Administration has begun ‘spot qualitative test’ of the fruits being sold in the markets, for a quicker detection of the presence of chemicals if any. 

The last two mega seizures of chemically-ripened mangoes and bananas are the recent examples of the spot result.  “The raiding team of officials is now accompanied by our testing experts, to check whether the fruits have chemical contents. Spot test has become important considering that chemicals in the fruits will test positive only till a short period,” FDA Director Salim Veljee told Herald. 

The FDA sleuths, a week ago confiscated over 440 kgs of artificially ripened mangoes, costing over Rs 1.20 lakh from the Panjim municipal market. The surprise surveillance also saw confiscation of 10 kgs of turmeric powder that contained artificially synthetic colour, brought to ripen the mangoes.  While on Friday, the sleuths laid hands on 350 kgs of chemically-ripened bananas worth Rs 18,000 from the Mapusa municipal market. 

The seized products were soon destroyed in the respective municipals’ waste yards. 

Veljee conceded that in some raids, the tests also give negative results but, he added, this does not conclude the fruits are naturally ripened. “Negative result does not mean the fruits are not exposed to chemicals. The fruits need to be tested within a certain period after it is mixed in chemicals, for an accurate outcome,” he said.
