Fair price shop owners demand guaranteed monthly income

Or else threaten not to install biometric system based point of sales (POS) machines; Claim system is not viable

PANJIM: Fair price shop owners in the State have demanded that the government assure them a guaranteed monthly income, failing which they will not go for installation of biometric system based point of sales (POS) machines claiming the system is ‘non-viable’.

Addressing the media, All Goa Consumer Co-operative Society and Fair Price Shop Owners’ Association general secretary Gandhi Henriques said the government’s forceful installation of POS machines will put fair price shops and co-operative societies out of business and their employees on the street. “The services rendered by all fair price shop and societies will be destroyed and will left defunct,” he said. 

Henriques said fair price shops in the past used to handle items like sugar, kerosene, oil, milk, rice, wheat, the quantity which is reduced over the years. 

The association, with 311 members, claimed that currently, their minimum guarantee of monthly income is Rs 65,000 per month, which they demand the government will have to ensure post installation of POS machine. 

The association has already submitted their views to Civil Supplies Minister Govind Gaude and MLA Carlos Almeida. 

The association has demanded that the government work out the monthly income by way of allotting sufficient cards equivalent to the card holders that will regularly collect ration from the shop or society to meet the financial target and if not the government guarantee to pay the difference to make the unit viable.
