MARGAO:  More information has come to light about the Punjabi couple that committed suicide at Colva on Wednesday, suggesting that family pressure could have led them to take the extreme step.

The bodies of Beran Singh (25) and Harvinder Kaur (18) were found hanging from a ground-ward leaning coconut tree behind the Kentucky Shack at Colva beach.

After learning about the identities of the couple that they were from Punjab, the Colva police contacted their counterparts in Punjab requesting them to trace the parents of the couple. Since then, the Colva police have further learnt that Beran Singh was working at the hotel run by Harvinder’s father at Hoshiyarpur, where they fell in love with each other.

However, since Harvinder’s father objected to their relationship and subsequent marriage, the couple fled from Hoshiyarpur and came down to Goa.

Disclosing that Harvinder had carried with her Rs 30,000, Colva police suspect that the couple may have got married in a temple. Since coming to Goa the couple had stayed in Maria Hotel in Colva and was reportedly looking out for jobs.

Meanwhile, the Colva police have informed that the Punjab police and the parents of the couple will be arriving in Goa in the next three days.
