Pernem: A man and his son were killed while four others were severely injured in a tragic accident which occured early Sunday morning on the Siolim-Chopdem Bridge.

Joao Fernandes and his son Judas resident of Vithaldas Wada, Morjim succumbed after a Maharashtra registered car dashed into their car. 

The incident occured at 7 am when Judas Fernandes along with his family were travelling to Siolim in their car to attend the Sunday morning mass when the Maharashtra registeration (MH 04 FA 5070) car while overtaking a private bus went in the wrong lane and banged into the car (GA 11 A 1276) resulting in the instant death of Judas while his father João succumbed when he was being taken to the hospital.

The tragic incident left the people of Pernem in shock. The locals who gathered on the spot set the Maharashtra registered car on fire which led to a traffic jam on both sides of the bridge blocking the traffic for hours.

The police managed to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control, Anjuna police station's inspector Navlesh Desai said.

Four other occupants of the car including the wife of the deceased Milagrin Fernandes (48), daughter Synthia Monica Jaoa Fernandes, Elton Simoes (23) and Sonia Lobin Lobo escaped with severe injuries. 

The injured are presently undergoing treatment at Goa Medical College Hospital, Bambolim.  

Sources informed that the driver Shekhar Satyanarayan Dubey (34), resident of Vadhwa Meadown, Bhoiwadi, Kalyan, Mumbai (W) was drunk at the time of the accident.  

The accused person is arrested under Section 279, 337 and 304 of IPC and presently is in police custody.
