MARGAO: With Ganesh Chaturthi approaching fast, the high prices of essential commodities including pulses have not dampened the spirit of the common man in Margao as shoppers throng the market preparing for the festival.

Despite the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 prohibiting hoarding and black marketing of essential commodities, the pulses needed for everyday consumption have reached beyond common men's purchasing capacity.

Housewife Manda Torasker said that there is a constant hike in the price of pulses like tur dal, chana dal, moong, urad, gram, peas etc and other essential commodities have increased by Rs 10 to 15 per kg.

“This hike in prices is it created by an artificial crisis of essential commodities only to be sold at exorbitant prices in the market?” questioned Torasker

Ulhas Kerker, a prominent citizen alleged that prices of essential commodities were going up by leaps and bounds and alleged that shopkeepers never display the price list of the essential commodities and charge the customer according to their whims and fancies.

He alleged, “No price lists are displayed at shops, grocery or private shops resulting into creating an artificial crisis of essential commodities and selling essential commodities at higher prices.”

He suggested that authorities concerned should look into the matter and take necessary action against them so that the prices of essential commodities remain within reach.
