SP George says overstaying tourists will be detained in the centre

PANJIM: Foreigners overstaying in Goa now beware as the State government is set to start the detention centre for overstaying tourists soon.

Goa Police FRRO SP Bosco George told Herald that work on the new detention centre at Mapusa Judicial lock-up is complete. “Most of the work is complete and once the recruitment is done we plan to start by January 26,” he said.

George said that overstaying tourists will be detained in the detention centre and will be deported. “We will keep them in the detention centre and give access to their respective embassies but will not leave them till they bring in valid documents,” he said.

The requirement of a detention facility was felt in the State after a group of Nigerians created havoc on Porvorim highway in October 2013 following the death of one of their countrymen.

The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) and police had identified hundreds of Nigerians over staying illegally in the State.

The issue of Nigerians residing in Goa has become a major issue after the incidents in which Nigerians are involved.
