MARGAO: Block Development Officer Prasidd Naik, who has been appointed in charge to guide panchayats in garbage management in keeping with the orders of the National Green Tribunal, on Monday held a meeting with the panchayats of the Cuncolim constituency at Chandor Cavorim panchayat.
The meeting was attended by local MLA Clafacio Dias, representatives of Macasana, Guirdolim, Chandor Cavorim and Paroda panchayats as Ambaulim and Bali panchayats abstained.
Prasidd said the panchayats should maintain the law with regards to garbage management and enlisted various steps that the local bodies should take to stop garbage dumping by the roadside.
He asked the panchayats to fine people found dumping garbage by the roadside or in open spaces and suggested that per month at least four persons should be fined so that the message is clear to the people that they cannot use open spaces as garbage dumping sites.
He advised panchayats to start door-to-door collection of segregated garbage and added that the government would increase grants for garbage management to Rs 5 lakh for the current financial year.
Taking note of the cleanliness in Chandor Cavorim jurisdiction, he said it could be adopted as the model village while preparing the plan for garbage collection and added that the government would provide assistance in managing the garbage.
