MARGAO: Fire broke out near the Fatorda swimming pool on Saturday at around 10 pm. This is the second fire that broke out in the area in the last two weeks.
The area where the fire broke out was used as a dump site by Sports Authority of Goa and Ravindra Bhavan and was filled with thermocol, plastic and wood materials used as decorations and other structures during events held in Ravindra Bhavan and SAG. There are also metal scraps dumped at the site.
Although the cause of the fire is unknown, locals say that someone may have set the dump on fire since the area is currently undergoing renovations and there is no garbage management site to treat and dispose the thermocol waste.
Local activist Sanjeev Raiturkar who was present at the site when the fire broke out informed that he called the fire brigade but it took half an hour for the vehicle to reach the site. Once the fire brigade reached the site, they quickly put off the raging flames. There trees were damaged in the fire. No one was injured in the fire.
