Ship arrivals likely to decline; MPT chief attributes it to ‘consolidation’

VASCO: The season’s the first luxury cruise liner with 553 high-end tourists arrived at Mormugao Port on Tuesday, even as the cruise tourism in the State appears sliding downward after gaining momentum last season.

However, number of passengers arriving by the cruise vessels expected to go up.

As per Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) authorities, last year they had handled 39 cruise vessels and hence had high expectations to host at least 45 cruise vessels this year. However, MPT would handle only 30-odd cruise ships this year.

“Yes though there is decline in the number of Cruise vessels that would be visiting the Mormugao Port during current the tourism season, but still there would be an increase in the number of cruise passengers as cruise vessels will have higher occupancy ratio as compared to past,” informed MPT Chairman I Jeyakumar.

Jeyakumar was speaking to media after inaugurating a new lift service at New Dawn Ashadeep School for special children at Headland Sada in Mormugao on Tuesday.

“The decline in cruise ships is due to consolidation of cruise ship sector. Here two shipping lines comes together and merge with each other for 100 percent occupancy and due to this reason, the number of cruise ships this year is 30 as against 39 ships handled last year. Also last year the total number of passengers was 63,000, however, despite the decline this year, the total number of passengers and crew will be 64000. So there is no drop but an increase in number of passengers,” he said.
