MARGAO: In a shocking incident, fish in large quantities were found dead inside the 'Khazan' water at 'Nokzonn', Vanxem-Loutolim, near the Borim Bridge. People have suspected it is due to the discharge of chemicals into the water by some unknown person. This is the second such incident reported in the locality in recent days.
The incident has been reported at the Maina-Curtorim police station. However, it has been also brought to the notice of the officials of the Fisheries Department, who are most likely to do an inspection on Wednesday.
Franky Dias, who got the authority on 'khazan' for fish farming on auction, told Herald that on Tuesday afternoon they noticed dead fish floating in the water.
"We were totally shocked to notice the incident, but we don't know the cause which led to the death of the fish on a larger scale", he told Herald. He also said that police were called to the site.
Avelin Menezes, a citizen of Loutolim, said that this is the second such incident reported in recent times.
"It is very shocking that fish is being found dead inside the Khazan water, a place where the fish farming is carried out in a traditional manner. We suspect chemicals being discharged into the water, as the adjoining road led towards the industries," he said.
He is of the strong opinion that fish being found dead and that too in large numbers can be only due to some chemicals.
Locals have claimed that this incident will result in a loss of lakh and at the same time it will create fear amongst the fish lovers from the locality.
