MAPUSA: A section of fish vendors operating in Mapusa Municipal Fish Market, headed by Shashikala Govekar approached the Mapusa Municipal Chairperson Shubhangi Vaigankar and requested to open the fish market.
The request was made considering the new relaxation where the government has allowed markets to open till 3 pm.
Claiming that the Panjim fish market is open, Shashikala urged that the Mapusa market too should be given the permission to open as the association members are ideal and finding it difficult to manage their living.
“Our association members are at home and are calling and inquiring about the opening of the fish market as they are facing hardship to manage their day today living”, stated Shashikala.
“Last time when the market was reopened, fish vendors followed social distancing as well as the customer. We can follow the same system in the market now”, another fish vendor informed.
“Fish vendors selling fish at the road side are not our members and they should not be allowed to operate. Municipal market should be opened since this is the only source of income to many especially the aged, vendors claimed.
“We have to plan how many vendors can be allowed to sit in the fish market. There is no such guideline to open the fish market. I will hold a meeting with the Chief Officer, vice chairperson, market committee chairman, other members and also municipal inspectors to discuss the issue”, said Chairperson Shubhangi.
