MAPUSA: Calangute police registered a case of unnatural death after an unidentified body of a female foreigner was found hanging from a banyan tree at Candolim, on Saturday.

The Calangute police conducted panchanama and later sent the body for autopsy to Goa Medical College (GMC) at Bambolim.

A case of unnatural death has been registered and they are yet to identify the body.

Sources informed that the foreigner is approximately 35-40 years of age. She has shoulder length straight dark hair and a tattoo on her left hand. She was wearing a dark coloured pant, light coloured sweatshirt and blue sandals.

Saligao PI Santosh Dessai, who is holding additional charge of Calangute Police station, told Herald that foreigner died due to strangulation.

“The lady has committed suicide by hanging herself to a tree. It was an unnatural case of death and the autopsy was conducted on Monday. The reports revealed that death was caused due to hanging. The lady looks like a foreigner but we are yet to identify who she is. We have ruled out any chances of rape or sexual assault. It was a fresh body and we were informed within six hours of her death,” Dessai said.

The Calangute police have informed all the police stations as well as the British and Russian embassies to check if they have any missing cases reported.

Meanwhile, Advocate Vikram Varma told Herald that they are yet to ascertain the identity of the deceased foreigner.

“Currently we have no details of her nationality. We tried to connect the Russians in Goa and overseas through social media, but nobody has reverted back to us as yet. The moment her identity is confirmed we can get more details. The moment we have any information we would also share it with the police. It may take another 24 hours,” Varma said.
