PANJIM: Four panchayats in South Goa -- Orlim, Cavelossim, Chandor and Velim opposed the draft Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) at their gram sabhas held on Sunday.

The Orlim special gram sabha opposed the CZMP with the villagers requesting the Panchayat to write to the concerned government department such as the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) their objections to the several discrepancies observed in the draft CZMP.

“The Orlim villagers have appealed to the Orlim Village Panchayat by submitting over 1,200 objections regarding the CZMP requesting the Orlim Village Panchayat to write to the concerned government department such as the GCZMA forwarding their objections with a resolution being passed in this regards. Orlim villagers have to prepare their CZMP,” the Orlim Sarpanch Tamica D’Silva said.

The Cavelossim gram sabha also opposed the same due to several discrepancies within the plan.

Former Cavelossim sarpanch Edwin Barretto said, “the Cavelossim villagers attending the gram sabha questioned why the State government had asked the villagers to prepare the CZMP if the suggestions made by the villagers were not incorporated in the plan.”

Chandor gram sabha asked the panchayat to object to the CZMP as the draft sent at present did not include any of the suggestions or recommendations made by the panchayat earlier.

It demanded that the public hearing be postponed till an expert visits the village to explain the maps to the locals.

At the Velim gram sabha the villagers said there were several discrepancies observed in the plan and hence they were opposed to the plan.
