PANJIM: Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant on Saturday assured that the water supply to Tiswadi and Ponda talukas would be restored by Monday.

Residents of Tiswadi and Ponda are suffering a major water crisis since Thursday, after a landslide of the earth embankment at Curti-Khandepar caused a breakdown of the major 900 mm dia DI and 750 mm dia CI pipelines, supplying water to the two talukas.

Speaking to media persons, Sawant said that the work on restoring the pipeline would be finished by Monday. “I am monitoring the situation. The water supply will be restored by Monday and till then the State government will supply free water to the people through tankers,” he said.

Several water tankers have been commissioned by the government to provide water to areas that are suffering from the water supply stoppage, including the State capital Panjim, the CM said.

Earlier in the day, Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Dipak Pauskar said the work on restoration of the pipeline has been going on round the clock, without any break being taken. “I am monitoring the restoration work to ensure that it is completed in time,” he said, assuring that the water supply would be restored by Monday evening.
