Wants draft CRZ notification scrapped

CALANGUTE: Goans Against CRZ (GACRZ) held their sixth village protest on Monday with live music near the Bandodkar statue at Calangute beach main entrance demanding that the draft CRZ 2018 notification be scrapped to save Goa’s coastline. Participants through their melodious performances protested the BJP government’s nod to the CRZ notification.

The activists shouted slogans such as “Soddchena re soddchena, Jiklea Bogor Soddchena”. A number of political activists warned the gathering that the draft CRZ notification if implemented will have an adverse effect on Goa, the Goans and fishermen.

Sudeep Dalvi, GACRZ member and activist alleged that there was a capitalist agenda behind the notification and termed it as the beginning of the end for Goa.

“All of us have gathered here to oppose the CRZ 2018, which is going to be notified by the state government without taking the stakeholders into confidence. The Government has decided to decrease the limitation line of CRZ regulation from 200 mts to 50 mts but the question of GACRZ is that if the high tide line is reduced then what will happen to the fishermen and the shack owners of the state,” he questioned.

GPCC spokesperson Amarnath Panjikar said, “Congress is with GACRZ and will fight to save the freedom of Goans. This draft CRZ 2018 notification will spell doom for Goa”.

GACRZ member and activist Kennedy Afonso alleged that the government has ignored a 36-page document of objections pertaining to the draft notification sent by the Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvott (GRE).

“The government is out to sell Goa and is working under the pressure of the Union Government, which is also ruled by the BJP.  The new draft CRZ notification will finish the entire coastline of the state and tourism will be adversely affected.  The government is desperately trying to impose this notification to please certain sections of the society but the ground reality is that more than 100 villages especially the coastal villages where the population density is more than 2,161 per sq kms will fall in CRZ-IIIA,” Kennedy alleged.

President of the Traditional Shack Owners Association of Goa, Manuel Cardozo warned that if this notification comes into existence then all the fishermen, water sports operators and shack owners will be displaced. “Whatever is left on the beaches will also be sold to outsiders if this notification is implemented,” he warned.
