PANJIM: This year’s Goa Common Entrance Test (GCET) -- for admissions to professional degree programmes -- saw a drop in the maximum score by students across all three subjects -- Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, as compared to 2022 examination. But officials attributed the dip in score to ‘normal fluctuations’.

Interestingly, this is the last GCET exam answered by the students as from the 2024-25, those seeking admission to professional colleges will have to answer either the JEE-Main or the national eligibility-cum-entrance test (NEET), as applicable. The State government has scrapped GCET, which was introduced way back in 2005.

The top score in Mathematics was 71, as against 2022’s 74. In Chemistry too, the highest marks scored were 70 as compared to 71 last year. In Physics, too, the maximum score by a student stood at 61 out of 75, while last year it was 64.

Addressing mediapersons, Secretary Education Prasad Lolayekar said that the average marks scored in Physics this year were 22.68, in Chemistry it was 27.97 while in Mathematics it is 27.87.

Last year, in Physics the average score was 24.9, in Chemistry it was 26.7 while in Mathematics the average was 26.8.

Responding to the question on drop in score, Director of Technical Education Vivek Kamat said that it is very normal as the students answering the exams were different and test papers are also not the same. “It is a normal trend,” he said.

Earlier, Lolayekar said that no more GCET exams would be conducted in future and all the admissions to engineering and pharmacy seats would be based on JEE and JEE Main.

As such, the admissions to engineering colleges for 2024-25 will be based on students' score at JEE-Main 2024, while for an enrolment to B.Pharm, a student's best aggregate percentile marks scored in Physics and Chemistry either at NEET or JEE-Main will be counted. Students who desire to study medicine will have to qualify at the NEET (undergraduate), 2024.

Meanwhile, Panjim based Adeep Sinai Kuncalienkar emerged as the topper for GCET who scored 194 out of 225 in Physics, Chemistry And Mathematics combined. The second highest scorer was Palash Pai Angle who got 188 out of 225 all-together.

While Adeep was Physics topper, Atharva Naik scored highest in Chemistry and Hemanshini Desai was top scorer for Mathematics. Atharva and Warren Tavares ranked third with score of 126 each out of 150. While Atharva scored in Physics and Chemistry, Warren had appeared for Physics and Mathematics.

Further, DTE informed that the admissions for professional degree courses will commence from May 19.
