To issue stop work notice to hotel project proponent
VASCO: The Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) officials on Monday inspected the proposed hotel project site at Velsao following complaints from the locals that the project comes under CRZ.
Following the inspection it was decided to issue stop work notice to the project proponent.According to the information, the site inspection was conducted by expert members from GCZMA namely Dr Prabhakar Shirodkar and Dr Audhut Bhounsule in the presence of Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha and Velsao Sarpanch Henrique D’Mello.
During after scrutinizing a copy of the plan approved by the TCP and the Panchayat, Dr Shirodkar pointed out that the plan does not have the GCZMA approval nor has an EIA been conducted given the fact it is a mega project. Accordingly, he asserted that the panchayat cannot approve the said plan.
“A project of such a magnitude needs the EIA report to be approved by the Ministry of Environment and Forests and Climate Change, which is not done in this case. The project seems to be partly within 200m of HTL and partly in between 200m to 500m of HTL. A stop work notice will be served to the proponent of the project immediately and subsequent inspection and other formalities will follow,” Shirodkar said.
Alina said, “When the villagers approached me at my office in Upasnagar with respect to the hotel project, I guided them to approach GCZMA and other authorities as the project at the given eco-sensitive area site did not appear feasible and will destroy the pristine village of Velsao. It was indeed sad to find out that the panchayat, which is formed by villagers, does not think twice on giving clearances to illegal projects, even at the cost of destruction of their own village” .
