PANJIM: In a major embarrassment to the Water Resources Department (WRD), the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) has decided to recover compensation from them for the environmental damage as a result of filling done in Khandepar and Tar Rivers.

The Authority, during its meeting held last week, has also issued directions to all the government works department not to undertake any river filling without prior permission from them.

The WRD had found itself in the middle of controversy after its contractor dumped mud into Khandepar River in Ponda and Tar River in Mapusa to construct bandhara and to mobilise machinery required to desilt the water bodies. The GCZMA had directed WRD to clear the mud.

The GCZMA had received a complaint with regard to the pollution of Khandepar River due to dumping of soil for the construction of bandhara without the requisite permission.

Following the inspection conducted by them, it was noted that the soil is dumped on the banks of the river and that it would be shifted to appropriate location.

The authority has decided to direct Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) to estimate environmental compensation due to filling done in Khandepar and Tar Rivers by WRD and to recover the same from the polluters.
