GEC, NIT Hostels at Farmagudi declared as COVID Care Centres

PANJIM: A day after Health Secretary’s announcement, the District Magistrate, South has notified the hostel premise of Hostel V of Goa Engineering College and the entire premises of NIT Mandavi Hostel, Ponda as COVID-19 Care Centres to house asymptomatic COVID-19 positive patients from July 4, 2020.

On Saturday, the Health Secretary Nila Mohanan had said that the government is contemplating using IIT and NIT hostels as COVID care centres.

Besides this, she said the government will also make arrangements for 200 beds at Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium, Bambolim.

“There is some issue of leakage at Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, the PWD is attending to it. Once it is done, it will be used as COVID Care Centre,” she added.

Mohanan said the current COVID hospital has 85 patients while rest are at Shiroda, MPT Hospital, SAI Women’s Hostel, Peddem etc.

“As of now there are enough beds, but arrangements are being made for more,” she informed.

Currently, Goa has over 1700 cases and nearly 900 active cases while there has been six deaths.
