PANJIM: The Goa Medical College (GMC), Bambolim has introduced cutting-edge technology Endovenous Laser Technology (EVLT) for treatment of Varicose veins.

Pointing out that prevalence of varicose veins disease is 20-25 per cent in adult population in Goa, GMC Dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar said that patients can now avail the treatment worth Rs 70,000 to Rs one lakh, free of cost at the GMC.

According to Dr Bandekar, so far 24 patients had already availed the new treatment facility. The treatment referred to as laser ablation is day-care procedure, wherein patient can walk after two hour of procedure as the surgery is non-invasive. The patient can start working from next day.

Varicose veins occur when the walls of veins weaken. As blood pressure in vein increases, the weakened walls allow the vein to get bigger. As the vein stretches, the valves that keep blood moving in one direction in the vein cannot work like they should. Sluggish blood backs up or pools in the vein, causing the vein to swell, bulge and twist. It usually occur in persons who are in long standing profession such as bus conductors, teachers, chefs, surgeons etc and also has hereditary syndrome.

The treatment is being offered through Department of Interventional Radiology at GMC.
