vasco: Goa Suraksha Manch’s (GSM) Mormugao block welcomed the Centre’s new National Education Policy (NEP).

They have demanded that the grants to the English medium schools be cancelled immediately on the grounds that now the Centre has also come forward to encourage primary schools to have the local language as the Medium of Instruction (MoI). They said they will place this demand before the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.

GSM Youth President, Nitin Faldesai recalled that ‘in 2011 the Congress government led by then CM Digambar Kamat gave grants to around 135  primary schools operating on English medium , some of which were run by religious society.

"This move at that time gave birth to the agitation over the medium of instruction by BBSM.  This was earlier opposed by Shashikala Kakodkar who insisted that primary education be taken in local language. Later former CM (late) Manohar Parrikar also supported the agitation and assured to withdraw grants to English medium schools when he came to power. But after he came to power, he did not fulfill his promise and continued with the grants. This agitation continues till date and even today grants are being given to English schools,” he added.
