PANJIM: Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) on Thursday directed 18 iron ore mining leases, that had applied for Consent to Operate, to submit a bank guarantee assuring ‘No Pollution’ by May 19, failing which permission for operating the leases would not be granted.

In all 20 lease holders were asked to submit bank guarantee during the Board meeting held on May 15. However, only two lessees – V M Salgaocar (Vegus-Surla mine) and Badruddin Mavani (Caurem) – submitted the bank guarantee assuring no pollution in the vicinity. The Board is expected to grant Consent to Operate under the Air and Water Acts to these two mining leases.

“We have issued fresh letters to the mining firms asking them to produce bank guarantee by May 19, failing which the Consent to Operate will not be issued to their mines,” a GSPCB official said.

“If the mining firms want, they can produce the bank guarantee once the new mining season commences in October. But without bank guarantee, we will not issue them consent,” the official said. The mining season ends on May 31 due to four month long monsoon.

A decision on the 12 mining leases in Sonshi, which are currently inactive, is expected to be taken when the Board meets on Friday. During the last meeting held on Monday, the Board was not satisfied with the air monitoring data.

Mining activities at Sonshi have been shut since April 28, after GSPCB declined to grant consent to operate.
