Garbage dumped at Tolleaband in Xeldem

quepem: Tolleaband area in Xeldem village of Curchorem is slowly turning into garbage yard. This spot in one of the beautiful and peaceful places in Xeldem. The area obtained its name because of the lake and lies on the internal road on way to Cacumoddi from Dhamad.

“For the past two/three years people have started throwing waste material like plastic bags and glass bottles on the periphery of the lake,” said Prashant Gawas Desai, a Xeldem local.

Few years back the Xeldem panchayat had cleaned up the premises and beautified the area but few careless people have begun dumping their waste in this area turning it into a waste land, Desai added.

This area is being neglected since it falls under the jurisdiction of the panchayat and as well as the Quepem Municipality. Some miscreants have also damaged the public property, the local quipped.

Quepem municipal councillor  Vishwas Desai said that Tolleaband falls under the jurisdiction of the Xeldem panchayat which has to look after it. “I have already informed the panchayat authorities about the garbage,” Vishwas said.

Maria Fernandes, the Xeldem Deputy Sarpanch said she will look into the situation and clear the area as early as possible.

Xeldem Sarpanch Caitan Lima added that the issue of the garbage at Tolleaband crops up every now and them. “This happens due to the irresponsible behaviour of people who throw not only their garbage but the empty cans and bottles after drinking,” Lima added.
