Garbage trucks leak slurry onto Margao roads, cause two-wheelers to skid

Team Herald

MARGAO: Citizens in Margao and Fatorda are growing increasingly frustrated with the slippery road conditions caused by leakage from garbage compactors operated by the Margao Municipal Council (MMC). The spilled slurry has led to several minor accidents involving two-wheelers skidding on the slick surfaces, prompting concerns over public safety. One such incident took place in Fatorda recently, wherein several two-wheeler riders skidded on the Agalli road on their way to work, and sustained minor injuries.

In a temporary measure to warn motorists, municipal workers have resorted to spreading dry coconut leaves across affected areas of the roads. However, this stop-gap solution has done little to alleviate the broader issue of substandard garbage compactor maintenance.

The garbage collectors themselves have voiced frustration over the recurring spillage problems. Despite lodging numerous complaints, they claim higher municipal officials have yet to take adequate steps to equip the compactors with spillage-prevention mechanisms like accompanying water tankers.

Residents have demanded a permanent solution, such as investing in new compactor trucks or implementing stringent maintenance protocols on existing vehicles to prevent further leakage incidents endangering road users.
