PANJIM: A peaceful State, Goa’s good quality index also brings in vacationers. Director General of Police Mukesh Kumar Meena has showered praises on Goa, where he has been posted on transfer since around five months.

“People have an impression that Goa is a peaceful State, and it is indeed ... except for some (crime) incidents. Goa is largely peaceful and I really appreciate, especially the Goan public as not many indulge in organised crime or harassing of tourists. As a result, people want to come to Goa no matter what the weather condition is. It has scenic beauty and a ‘very good’ air quality index,” he said at a press conference, on Saturday.

Incidentally, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her politician son Rahul Gandhi flew to Goa in a private jet from Delhi, after doctors advised her to shift out of the national capital in view of heavy pollution and poor air quality.  On being asked about the security ahead of peak tourist season in Goa, the DGP said it would be a challenging task due to the ongoing pandemic.

“I could see on beaches, the crowd has increased and hotels too are seeing more and more bookings. We have already discussed with the officers and they are forming a strategy. Due to COVID-19 it is a challenging task to deploy force round-the-clock," he said.

The State Police has also decided to ensure personal safety of Assistant Prof Shilpa Singh, who is allegedly facing death and assault threats on her and her family. The senior officers have directed their subordinates to speak to the students and concerned persons at the college not to provoke a tense atmosphere. The assistant professor is allegedly facing threats for allegedly promoting socially hateful thoughts about a particular religion. She is also being investigated for the offence which was registered at Panjim Police Station.
