PANJIM: Goa continues to battle a high positivity rate, with the small State again at the top of this list. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the State’s average positivity rate in the first seven days of May stood at 48.5 per cent. From May 1 to 6, a total of 17,215 new patients tested positive for COVID-19.

As per the latest information shared by the Union Ministry for Health and Family Welfare, Goa’s average positivity rate as on May 7, stood at 48.5 per cent – the highest in the country. Haryana ranks second with a 36.1 per cent positivity rate.

What is interesting is that while Goa’s positivity rate saw a rise of 0.5 per cent as against the rate till May 2, when it stood at 48 per cent, Haryana reported a decline in the rate by almost one per cent – that is from 37 per cent to 36.1 per cent.

Not just Haryana, but all other States like Karnataka, Maharashtra, Kerala, Delhi have also reported a declining positivity rate.

With 33,013 cases, April turned out to be the worst month, wherein the positivity rate jumped from a mere 8 per cent in the beginning of the month to 44.75 per cent by the month end.

As on Thursday, the State’s COVID confirmed caseload stood at 1,08,267 with 3,869 new infections.

The month of May is also turning out a killer month, as 333 people have already succumbed to the virus in just six days of the month. A total of 1,501 people have so far lost their lives due to COVID so far.

Goa had become the first State in the country to be declared as “COVID free State” in mid-April 2020. However, within a month, the State reported new cases and the surge continued thereafter.
