PANJIM: The Department of Tribal Welfare has submitted a proposal to the Central government to reserve four seats for ST community in the Goa Assembly.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant made this statement during a meeting with the ST delegation.

Sawant informed the delegation that the decision had been taken following recommendation from the Parliamentary Committee for Welfare of SCs/STs chairman Kirit Premjibai Solanki who had directed the Goa government to submit a proposal to the Union government to reserve seats in the Goa Assembly for STs.

In a statement, United Tribal Association Alliance (UTAA) president Prakash Velip said that the delegation met Sawant on June 1 to know the status of political reservation for ST.

Velip said that during the meeting, the Chief Minister informed that a fresh proposal recommending reserving four assembly constituencies to STs has been sent to the Central government on May 24.

He said that a similar proposal was moved to the Centre by State in 2007 and 2020, which failed. “Now it’s time for Goa ST communities to come together and pressurise the Centre to fulfill our demand,” Velip said.
