Goa witnesses heavy downpour on Thursday

PANJIM: The South West Monsoon has extended its watery embrace with the State witnessing a heavy downpour on Thursday and the IMD predicting that heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places over South Goa and North Goa on September 24 and 25.

According to India Meteorological Department (IND) Goa, the capital city received 2.9 inches of rainfall between 8.30 am to 5.30 pm. Similarly, Mormugao received 1.27 inches of rainfall between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm. Heavy downpour was experienced in the State in the afternoon.

As per the weather office, the State has so far received 117.3 inches of rainfall as against the normal rainfall of 114.7 inches during the period of June 1, 2023 to September 20, 2023, marking a departure of two per cent.

The State received 4.4 inches of average rainfall as against 2.7 inches of rainfall during the period from September 14 to September 20, marking an excess of 1.6 inches of rainfall.

The State had been receiving scattered rainfall for the last few days. On Sept 20, Canacona received 3.5 inches of rainfall, Ponda 1.57 inches, Sanquelim 1.1 inches, Quepem, 1.1 inches, Pernem 1.1 inches, Mormugao 1.1 inches, Margao 1.1 inches, Sanguem 0.7 inches, Mapusa 0.7 inches, Ela (Old Goa) 0.3 inches and Panjim 0.3 inches.
